Cowgirl nails are about to be everywhere

Americana is having a moment. Cowgirl hats and western boots have infiltrated our wardrobes and now cowgirl nails are shaping up to be a big olllll’ trend for summer.

Beyonce has a little something to do with it. Her Cowboy Carter album hard-launched our obsession with all things cowgirl and put ultra voluminous Texan hair on the international map, but even before then, she was teasing us by making silver cowboy hats a signature of her Renaissance tour.

Likewise, Miley Cyrus has long embraced her country roots and her more recent collaborations with Dolly Parton (like their joint New Year’s show) has helped introduce Dolly to a whole new generation of fans.

While country music and western style has always been popular, particularly amongst American’s from the southern states, the recent spotlight has renewed and expanded its fan base. One way to pay homage is through cowgirl nails and we’ve seen an explosion in cowgirl themed nail designs (particularly for members of the Beyhive), with a kitsch mix of cow print, flames, flags, stars and stripes.

What are cowgirl nails?

“The Western trend is gaining huge traction for summer, thanks to a shift in popular culture towards the country aesthetic and sound,” notes Tinu Bello, A list manicurist and senior ambassador at Mylee. “This is now being reflected in our manicures. The key things that make a cowgirl mani are the tones, the texture, the embellishment, and the nail art,” she says.

“The colour palette is the easiest way to adopt this trend. Typically you should look for earthy tones. Brown, tan, beige, and terracotta mimic the desert and prairie landscapes. However, we are seeing a more modern take on cowgirl-core this year. Blue and green represent denim and the open skies or greenery of the south. Gold and silver metallic tones can also be used to evoke the look of belt buckles, spurs, and other metallic accessories. For a patriotic look, try red, white and blue to emulate the stars and stripes, or try pinks for a true Dollywood style mani,” says Tinu.

How to create cowgirl nails yourself?

“The easiest way to rock the trend is with a hint of cow print. This can either be an accent on all nails, or all over one nail. This is pretty simple to re-create at home,” says Tinu who’s rounded up how to do it below…

  • Prep
Start by preparing your nails, shaping them, and applying a base coat.
  • Base
Next, apply two coats of white nail polish, letting each layer dry completely.
  • Dot
Using a dotting tool dipped in black nail polish, create irregular, randomly placed spots of varying sizes on each nail.
  • Seal
Allow the spots to dry thoroughly, then apply a top coat to seal the design and add shine.
  • Tidy
Finally, clean up any excess polish around the nails with a brush or cotton bud dipped in nail polish remover.

How to wear cowgirl nails?

The good news is there’s loads of ways to tap into the trend, whatever your style and depending on how hard you want to go. You can take elements and go minimal or statement with them, but the aesthetic leans itself perfectly to maximalism. “Design and pattern is king here. You are going to want to adorn your nails with fun drawings, or decals. In addition to cow print, try paisley and bandana patterns, cactus and desert scenes, snakes and flames, and my favourites, cowboy boots and Stetson hats,” says Tinu.
