Though there’s never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we’ve chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of Feb. 7-9.

Hip Hop Canvas: Beats, Art & Fashion

  • WHERE: Ciné (234 W. Hancock Ave.)
  • WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 8 at 9 p.m. ($10 admission)
  • DETAILS: All ages are welcome to attend this star-studded Black History Month celebration featuring live performances of hip hop, R&B, step and dancehall reggae. Athens-based artist Broderick Flanigan will be doing live art all night, and the event will be hosted by Montu Miller with DJ Chief Rocka on the 1s and 2s.

‘The Vagina Monologues’

  • WHERE: Marigold Auditorium (371 N. Church St. in Winterville)
  • WHEN: Friday, Feb. 8 and Saturday, Feb. 9 at 8 p.m. ($16 admission)
  • DETAILS: For the third year running, The Cottage will put on their benefit production of the enduring feminist stage play “The Vagina Monologues,” which consists of several individual and group episodes dealing with issues related to women’s health. Athens Film Project

  • WHERE: The Morton Theatre (195 W. Washington St.)
  • WHEN: Friday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. (Free admission)
  • DETAILS: The Athens Film Festival and the Athens Historical Society have collaborated on this screening of four locally-made short films that deal with the history of Athens. The program will feature “Emancipation,” “The Knox Institute,” “Industrial Athens” and “The Founding of Athens & the Struggle for the Oconee River.”

‘Clean Slate’ free screening

  • WHERE: Ciné (234 W. Hancock Ave.)
  • WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2:30 p.m. (Free admission)
  • DETAILS: Cedar Shoals High School graduate Dan Ewen is one of the co-creators of the new Amazon Prime comedy series “Clean Slate,” which stars co-creators Laverne Cox and George Wallace. Ciné will be playing the first two episodes of the show, and Ewen is scheduled to be in attendance to introduce the program.

Food Truck Fest

  • WHERE: El Carretonero (124 Rowe Rd.)
  • WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 8 from 5 to 10 p.m. (Free admission)
  • DETAILS: Local event space El Carretonero’s annual Food Truck Fest is a great opportunity to chow down on some of the best street food in the Athens area. In addition to the eats, guests can enjoy Valentine-themed cocktails from the bar and visit the “craft station” to create a Valentine’s Day card for that special someone.
