Hair + Health Goals: Black women must learn to prioritize both

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Black women all too often have to worry about their hair and how it’s being perceived in society. Some of them aren’t as active as they should be because of that.

Latanya Settles, owner of Forever Free Fitness, says Black women can’t compromise their health to maintain a hairstyle.

According to the American Heart Association, stroke is the leading cause of death for Black women. They are also more likely to have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and a family history of heart issues.

Age doesn’t make them immune as nearly 59 percent of Black women ages 20 and older have cardiovascular disease.

“My advice is go get a scarf, go get a head wrap, wrap your hair up but don’t allow that to stop you from pursuing the best version of your health,” Settles said. “Be you. Be free. Have fun and be healthy.”

Gabrielle Phifer talked with her and other women about the struggles and successes of finding the perfect hair and workout routine.
