Lydia Rees-Martin, 33, from Nail Artist from Torquay studied Nail Technology level 2 at South Devon College and qualified in 2014.
Lydia told us: “I decided to become a nail artist because I have always had a passion for nail art. I remember being in school drawing in my own nails!”Leading up to my business launch I have continually trained and advanced my skill set keeping my knowledge up to date by furthering my education surrounding my profession. I trained in Efile & undertook relevant training in gel products for the brand I use – Magpie Beauty. Taking the plunge in September 2023 going self employed as a single mum filled with sheer determination and a plan to succeed. I created a nail studio offering a safe space for people to feel comfortable to be themselves, a non intimidating space to relax and be pampered.
“I provide luxury nail treatments, specialising in nail art and gel. So far I have been successful in creating my own business plan, branding, marketing, photography, modellingnproducts, creating content and creating my own website. “In November 2023 I became a brand ambassador for mynfavourite cuticle oil brand Blabz Beauty Bar. In December 2023 I launched my website where I have an online booking
system and shop to buy custom made luxury press on nails, nail decals and more products to come! I also have been, shortlisted as a finalist for the HBA awards UK for Nail Technician of the year 2024. So far the past few months of my business venture I have been hitting all my goals, I’m really looking forward to bring my vision to life and proving that even when life throws you curveballs you can still prosper and succeed.
“I have overcome a lot of personal challenges the past four years and defeated all odds, and single handedly I am bringing my dream to life while balancing being a mum and running my business. I have big dreams and goals and plan to reach them, this is just the beginning of my story. I would love to win Nationals or regionals 1st place as Nail technician of the year. To have accomplished what I have in this short space of time since opening my business means everything to me. I believe in myself now whereas years before I wasn’t brave enough to do this and I’m proud of myself for taking the plunge and turning my dream into a reality. I move with intention and work hard to bring my vision to life for my brand.
“I want people to feel safe and comfortable in my space, I offer silent treatments for those who don’t want the small talk. Mental health awareness means a lot to me and I would love to be able to incorporate that into my business/brand. Everyone deserves to feel good and indulge in self care without feeling judged.
“The UK Hair and Beauty Awards mission is to support businesses of all sizes, and expose all candidates to new opportunities via social media and in the hair and beauty world, no matter their financial or social status. HBA are breaking down barriers to support smaller industry businesses, helping contestants build followings and recognition – even if they don’t win. That’s why they’re celebrating the entire process of the competition and all the amazing talent that
has entered.
