Normani is just a few weeks away from the release of her long-awaited debut album Dopamine. She gave a preview of what the project will sound like last month with lead single “1:59,” and her latest single “Candy Paint” should come as a familiar surprise to fans.
“Candy Paint” first surfaced publicly when Normani previewed the track in a Bose commercial last year. “If you let me take him, you might never get him back / I’m a baddie and I don’t know how to act / Booty candy painted with the diamond in the back / It’s too bad your n***a don’t know how to act,” she sings on the track. “When I’m finished, baby, you can have him back / Mhm, baby, you can have him back / Booty candy painted with the diamond in the back.”
With five years of standalone singles like “Motivation,” “Wild Side,” and “Fair,” Normani has traveled quite a journey to reach her debut LP. When speaking about the project with WhoWhatWear, she confessed that it means so much more than just an album coming out.
“It feels like a representation of everything I’ve gone through to get to this moment,” the Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree said honestly. “I know I needed time, experiences, and space coming out of [Fifth Harmony] in order to become the version of myself I needed to be. Without [all of that], I would not be able to exist within the creative space that I am in now. I would not be able to make the type of music I’m making now.”
“Music is me through and through,” she added. “When I’m onstage, you can’t tell me that I’m not home. It’s just a part of who I am.”
Dopamine arrives June 14.
