The saying “beautiful things deserve a beautiful home” could not be more accurate than when it comes to little treasures like jewelry. No matter if you own a bunch of necklaces, rings, bracelets, or chunky earrings, they deserve to have a dedicated jewelry organizer or box where they can live. After all, a jewelry box is a place to put your dearest belongings — it is the keeper of your prized possessions.

Whether you need to protect a flourishing collection or just a few precious pieces, there are endless ways to keep your little treasures clean and safe. For example, for those with an established assortment of jewels, a jewelry box or an armoire with segmented sections will allow you to create a space for various categories of jewels — from fine chains that tend to tangle to small pockets where studs or small huggie earrings can be scattered. On the other hand, frequent travelers will do best with something smaller but similarly sturdy, such as a well-organized travel jewelry case compact enough to slip into an overnight bag or suitcase without adding additional weight or bulk. And for those looking to keep their engagement ring or wedding bands somewhere secure, everything from jewelry dishes to individual ring boxes will help do so elegantly.

However, before swiping your credit card on your favorite jewelry box or organizer, Gwen Beloti, jewelry designer and founder of namesake brand Gwen Beloti, says there are a few things to remember. “First, it’s important to evaluate how extensive your jewelry collection is. Ask yourself: Do I have a massive amount of jewelry, or do I have a small collection that I rotate regularly?”

Next, consider what your jewelry is made of — regardless of whether you own costume jewelry or fine jewelry crafted from precious metals and stones that require a little more tender love and care. Size matters, too — consider whether your pieces are bold and chunky or minimalistic.

Finally, Beloti says to consider if aesthetics are important to you. This will help you decide if you want to look for a visually pleasing jewelry box that matches the interior of your home or if you want a functional jewelry organizer that may not be the most stylish. “Once we’ve established those three things, we are much more likely to invest in the right jewelry box,” Beloti says.

With many jewelry organizers and boxes, we’ve created this guide to the best jewelry organizers with expert tips and several product selections to find the best one for your needs and style.

What to Look for in The Best Jewelry Boxes and Organizers

  • Style: Consider style when you’re selecting your jewelry box. Make sure to look for an option that has compartments to suit what you are looking to store, such as rolls or slots for rings, compartments to place bracelets, hooks for necklaces — the list goes on. “I like organizers that have multiple trays and sections, each with compartments of various sizes for different types of jewelry,” Beloti tells WWD.
  • Materials: Jewelry organizers come in varying types of materials, including leather, plastic, nylon, glass, and an assortment of colors, too. Some can even serve as decor in your home. It’s worth considering what role you want your jewelry organizer to play when thinking about color and material. Is it meant for travel? You might want a small leather zip case or a foldable jewelry holder. Do you want it to be a statement piece in your bedroom? Maybe check out something that’s more design-forward like a monogrammed and transparent box.
  • Size: While a large jewelry box could be good for a collector, that doesn’t mean a small one isn’t just as good — it depends what you want your jewelry organizer to accomplish. “All jewelry boxes definitely do not need to be large, especially if you have a minimal collection of jewelry,” Beloti says. “You can certainly invest in a jewelry box that is no larger than something like 8 by 6 inches if you have a small capsule collection. If your collection is really concise, you can even opt for a tray or dish instead of a box. I lean towards a closed box of sorts, because anything out in open spaces for an extensive amount of time in your home is susceptible to dust. Nothing that a quick cloth can fix, but for ease and organization, a box is my preference.”

The Different Types of Jewelry Organizers and Boxes

There are plenty of jewelry organizers to choose from, so we’ve created a guide for you to find the best jewelry storage idea for you:

  • Hanging jewelry organizers: Like a garment bag for your jewels, a hanging organizer has a hook at the top and can easily become part of your closet organization system or hang over your door when you’re getting dressed. These are well-suited to hold plenty of pieces, including long necklaces.
  • Jewelry cabinets: If you have a jewelry collection that couldn’t fit inside a box, go with a jewelry cabinet or armoire. These standalone storage solutions have more space, plus they often include mirrors, hangers for long necklaces, and earring organizers. Plus, if you are short on space at home, some jewelry cabinets can even be mounted on the wall.
  • Jewelry boxes: Perhaps the most well-known jewelry boxes are a classic storage system for jewelry. They can have varying levels of organization with different compartments and come in many sizes and styles. Jewelry boxes also make great gifts for women and gifts for wives since there are styles to suit anyone’s taste, and many can be monogrammed with initials, logos, or names.
  • Ring holders: Rings, especially engagement rings and wedding bands, are some of the most valuable pieces of jewelry, both in sentimental and dollar value. So it makes sense you’d want to keep them in tip-top shape. To do so, think about what you need your rings for, and then you can either opt for a small dish that will keep your rings close by while sleeping or washing your hands, a traditional ring holder with a vertical column that holds your rings, an organizer with padded slots that can be used for traveling, or a small individual box that keeps your prized possession from getting scratched or lost.
  • Jewelry dish trays: Sometimes, less is more when it comes to jewelry storage, especially for those with a small jewelry collection and just need a jewelry dish. Jewelry dishes come in all shapes and sizes and are a great way to keep your everyday jewels close by or show off your little luxuries to visitors. Since they are generally lightweight and compact, they don’t occupy much nightstand space. They also enhance your home’s beauty with various styles that complement rustic, modern, and contemporary designs.

What is the Best Way to Store Jewelry?

Whether you have an extensive jewelry collection or are just starting yours, you might wonder how to store jewelry. Since jewelry needs to be correctly stowed to prevent tarnishing or scratching, we’ve rounded up five tips to keep earrings, necklaces, or rings safe at home.

  • Keep the temperature and humidity in mind: Temperature and humidity play an important role in keeping jewelry in good condition. Fine jewelry should be stored at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, and ideally somewhere with low humidity.
  • Store silver jewelry separately: Silver jewelry is the most susceptible to tarnish. Keep silver earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and rings neatly organized in a space with plenty of airflow and make sure they are not touching each other.
  • Keep your gemstones separate: Gems can scratch other jewels, so make sure you use a ring pad or keep your gems in independent slots on a jewelry tray. If you are storing your gemstones together, make sure you give the gems spaces between each other. If it is an engagement ring or something that will be worn daily, use a compartmentalized jewelry box that keeps them separated from each other.
  • Keep jewelry clean: Dirty jewelry is more likely to tarnish, discolor, or display other signs of damage. Before storing jewelry for extended periods, clean the pieces or have them cleaned professionally and keep them with other clean jewels.
  • Organize your jewelry in compartments: Beloti explains that having compartments helps with organization and makes daily decisions on what to wear a bit easier. “When you organize your jewelry in categories and compartments, they’re not only better accessible, they’re also more secure and less susceptible to damage,” she adds.
  • Hang necklaces: Necklaces might be the most complicated accessory to store. They often need to be hung on a wall jewelry organizer or flat in a necklace-friendly jewelry box; otherwise, they can quickly tangle.
  • Consider the material of the jewelry organizer: The material in which you store your jewelry does make a difference, so make sure to consider the type of fabric when selecting an organizer. Think soft materials, Beloti advises. “A velveteen or satin base can help protect your jewelry,” she says. “The soft surface will prevent friction and abrasion between the jewelry and the box.” She says that if the interior of a jewelry box is made of plastic or wood, it could cause abrasion. “Those materials are okay on the exterior, but the inside should be lined with a nonabrasive material. Boxes lined with natural fibers like cotton yield a safer environment for your jewelry. Natural fibers contain less chemicals and can be safer for your jewelry.”

What is the Best Way to Store Necklaces to Prevent Tangling?

Whether you wear tennis necklaces, chain necklaces, pearl necklaces, or anything in between, it’s important to store them properly to avoid tangles and prolong the life of your favorite jewelry pieces.

Necklaces require a little extra care, according to Beloti. “Necklaces can be tricky, and for several reasons; unlike any other jewelry category necklaces tend to have the widest range in size, particularly when it comes to length, but also width and thickness,” she says. “Because of that, storing, especially if you own several, might require a bit more effort.”

One way to do it is to have a separate jewelry box for necklaces. “There are boxes that have several sections with hooks, each for its own necklace. Particularly for chain and link styles (so you could use for link bracelets and anklets as well). This will absolutely help to prevent tangling. Each necklace has its own space and lies perfectly. Most boxes like this will allow you to lay flat your closed necklaces that are more minimal and up to maybe 10 mm in thickness. They also fit pieces that are up to say 20” or so in length.”

A jewelry stand can also help avoid tangling. And for chunkier pieces, Beloti recommends storing them in dust bags and placing them on top of one another.
