Trophy-winning detective hooks baddies and fish alike

Not only is Detective Sergeant Sonja du Plooy good at catching the bad guys, she is also tops when it comes to hooking fish.
The Dundee police detective recently scooped the ‘Lady Angler of the Year’ trophy at Freshwater Spartans Angling Club’s prestigious prize-giving ceremony in Newcastle.
Sonja has also represented the KZN SAPS angling team to earn her provincial colours. She took up fishing in 2010 as a hobby and admits to having been ‘bitten by the outdoor bug’ ever since.
Her biggest catch to date is a carp of 2.8kg, which she caught at the National Angling Championships.
“I have many fond memories of representing KZN at provincial and national level, and I am blessed to have won several trophies and medals,” Sonja said.
A highlight was taking part in the national trials at Bloemhof Dam and meeting up with anglers around the country. Sonja says she gets much joy from fishing and says it is great relaxation after the stresses and strains of law and order.
