Zano Mnguni on his dignity restoring brand Zee Afro Hair.
He wants black women to embrace their natural hair without resorting to chemical treatments.
Among many hairstyles Afro’s are a bold and beautiful representation of natural hair, representing cultural pride and individuality.
After conducting extensive research, he developed a successful formula that has helped restore the dignity and health of many black women’s hair.
At a time when weaves, wigs, and relaxers were booming, he broke the boundaries and started a haircare brand dedicated to proud, Africans. Nigel-born Businessman and serial innovator Zano Mnguni (44) started his 100 percent black-owned business, Zee Afro Hair as just an idea to help change the lives of women with African hair struggles.
After trying many formulas through extensive research and time, he successfully created formulas to help repair damaged hairlines and feed natural African hair.
He started his haircare business selling products on social media and through word of mouth.

He has a love of nurturing and caring for natural hair.
He was inspired to start his own unique haircare brand after working closely with friends at a hair salon in his hometown of Nigel Johannesburg.
“This is where I got first-hand experience in the business of hair,” Zano tells Drum.
“But I wanted to try something unique to assist women with damaged hairlines from too much styling, glue from wigs, and damaging products,” he said. In 2020, he got assistance from a biochemist to create what many call “a magic formula that has restored their dignity.” He took time to do his research.
“I took time to do my research and tried different formulas, and methods,” he says.
He realised although there was a growing trend of wigs and weaves, there was still a serious need to take care of natural hair.
“Our products are all about prevention of damage to and protection of African natural hair,” he says. “We use what nature provides to formulate hair care products that support African Women’s Hair Care needs.”

From selling online, he started supplying five Checker stores where his brand flew off the shelves. Zano now stocks more than 15 Checkers stores across South Africa and still counting.
“Our goal is to reach as many people as possible for them to try the product once for their lives to change.”
He currently has over 10 employees working at their manufacturing plant who are as passionate bout the hair business.”Everyone in our team has a passion for what we do, and they want to see women restore their dignity and confidence and be proud of showing off their natural hair.”
When he started out, he faced the challenge of competing with bigger already established brands. “But we are very confident that, unlike many other brands, we use high quality, natural, organic products that are affordable,” he says. “Seeing the positive results is what keeps us motivated to try and do better. Doing this while being able to create jobs, has been rewarding.
